Dr. Joel Fuhrman’s “Eat
To Live” Diet and Weight Loss
Plan
A Review
My wife watched Dr. Joel Fuhrman’s Eat To Live diet and weight loss TV program on PBS and thought his philosophy for losing weight made sense. It also didn’t sound especially difficult to follow. She suggested that I do the diet along with her, since we could encourage each other to stick to it. This article gives you details of our results.
First, a little background.
I was almost 64 years old when I began following Dr. Fuhrman’s Eat To Live diet and weight loss plan. In the last few years I had put on some weight because of chronic knee problems that made exercise difficult. The scale read 245 pounds at Thanksgiving, 2009 (that’s a lot, even though I’m a little over six feet tall). Below is a picture of me with my wife taken around that time (the baby is not ours, by the way, but a relative’s).
I had a partial knee replacement done on my right knee in early June of 2010 and then had the same procedure done on the left knee three months later. Between late September, 2010 (when I could exercise again) and July 1st, 2011, I had been able to drop about 25 pounds. But I seemed to have hit a wall at 220. No matter how much I exercised, or how carefully I watched what I ate, the scale kept reading between 216 and 222.
I decided to follow Dr. Fuhrman’s Eat to Live diet and weight loss plan to try to take off an additional 10-15 pounds.
I started the program on July 5th, 2011, after a July 4th holiday weekend in which I indulged in some unhealthy eating (understatement). The scale read 219.4 as I began.
On July 6th, the scale read 217.8. A significant drop in one day, in my estimation. A fluke? Possibly.
But on July 7th, I was down another pound-and-a-half. I decided to start documenting my weight loss with photos.

In other words, I dropped approximately 15 pounds between July 5th and July 25th. Obviously, Eat To Live was working for me.
Dr. Fuhrman has appeared on many TV shows to describe his Eat to Live weight loss program and healthy diet plan. In this clip, he describes why obesity has become such a huge (excuse the pun) problem in the United States.
I’m not the only one with a great success story. Another recently appeared in the Huffington Post, including before and after pictures, about a woman named Emily Boller. Here’s an excerpt of what she said in the article about Eat To Live:
“On July 10, 2008 I began following the nutritional recommendations in Eat to Live, by Joel Fuhrman, M.D., and after four weeks I’d lost 20 pounds. A year later I was 100 pounds lighter, and no longer craved high-salt, high-fat, or processed foods. Plus, I no longer had pre-diabetes, heart disease, or high blood pressure. My joints stopped aching, my back pain went away, I had more energy, and my mood lifted as well.
It’s been over three years since I changed my eating habits. The best thing about getting rid of my food cravings is that the weight stays off. I turned 50 this year, and I feel better and have more energy now than I did in my late 20s!”
